Our mothers were right when they told us if we had nothing nice to say, not to say it at all. I mean, really -- what is the point of a flame? I don't get it. Don't tell me I suck. Really, how would know that? If you think my *story* sucks, that's cool -- but tell me why. Well said, Christine! I like that a lot. It's almost like the Golden Rule as well. Don't do something you don't want done to you. No one WANTS a flame, so why would you leave one for someone else? It's only going to ruin their day. And if not their day, it's going to ping their heart with a touch of sadness in the very least. Whether they admit to it or not, it's the truth.

Ick. I hate flames from people who don't read the story first. It tells you nothing, except maybe that the reviewer doesn't like the most general subject that your fic falls under. I assume it's whole existance is just to be mean.

Gerf... I'm impressed with your ability to take it with such humour! I will definitely have to adopt this healthy attitude. It may be mean, but I agree it's HILARIOUS when someone makes the same mistake as the one they accuse you of - whilst accusing. (Of course, it's only when they're being mean.) Absolute statements are so tempting...especially since the characters are such individuals and so well defined by Ponyboy. But, they're great well-rounded characters; a lot of flamers seem to use their own opinions as the be-all end-all for the way in which a character can grow.

There's no sense in getting mad, when that's the reaction they *want* from you. That about sums up all flames. Great insight. Where were you back in '04? I learned that one the hard way, but most of the time I just laugh. I got a kick out of this one review I got in my second year writing on ff.net. Someone reviewed every action in my story as being 'redundant'. It got to the point where the whole review was, dare I say, redundant. I finally had to reply with "Do you know what redundant means?" and listed the definition. I got my apology, which was weird since it was a flame. This reviewer came back with "I'm sorry, but I just really don't like how you changed things." - much better than the word redundant over and over and over again, regardless of the fact it was no more help than the first 'review'. Seriously, you either laugh or drive yourself crazy. Me, I laughed and Jhon drove everyone crazy. Seemed fair to me at the time. But I'm also not that 14/15 year old kid anymore. You get used to them and they just roll off you. It's kind of callous in my mind, but hey. 'Beats getting into little wars with people who hinder you. Though it is amusing... Like Christine said, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. It goes both ways - flamer and reviewer. I'm calling the Kettle black again, so I'll end here. (Can you all tell I have no one to talk to and should just go to bed?) See ya in the funny papers!!! Tens

Sorry I keep replying to older topics but hey, they're new to me! I have a habit of leaving "Great job!" reviews and sometimes "Update soon," too, because I enjoy a story so much that I can't wait for the next chapter. I've tried to be more specific in my reviews lately. If I don't like a story I just don't review at all. It goes into the not having anything nice to say category. I'll even review chapter to chapter sometimes with a little "Nice chapter" or whatever because if I'm bothering to say anything it means I've read it. I realize I'm not always 'constructive' but at least the person knows I'm enjoying what they're saying and how they're saying it. Of course, the best writers I've seen on ff.net are all HERE. I'm not kissing ass. It's the truth which is why I joined this board in the first place. You're all very inspiring.

Ya know what? I lied...I don't leave as many of the quick comments as I thought I do...I'm so OCD that I went and checked my favorite stories and the comments I've left and I impressed myself! Ok, I'm still not totally constructive but I do tell what it is that I enjoyed.

I'd rather have the "Good job, update soon" review than none, I suppose. But I prefer even the littlest comment - "I liked the dialogue" or "nice end line". Just one little thing they liked would be nice. Or one thing they didn't like! Just so I know they actually read the chapter....because sometimes I wonder if they do lol. I totally agree. One other thing I hate is when reviewers abberviate. I've gotten many "Update plz"s, even thugh they are better the nothing because it shows you someone's reading!

I really don't get tHiS tHiNg it seems like a ridiculous amount of effort to go to to look barely literate - or is there a quick key or something lol.
I don't hate anything in reviews, I just like to know people are reading. Although it does annoy me slightly when people review a new chapter with one word - "Update" um I thought I just DID update!

My story Ann and The Gang that is a complete Mary-Sue. I think we all hate it if anyone's ever read it. I was just looking it over actually and it made me laugh how stupid and horrible it is.

Can't talk. Must unscramble brain. Transmission... failed. o.O
I really don't understand that typing. It's obnoxious and extremely difficult to read.
I don't like generic reviews. I like to know that, not only did they click on my story, they read my story.

I now want cereal. But that means getting up...Meh, cereal tomorrow morning then!
No, I honestly agree with this one. I hate all forms of webspeak. It's nothing personal, it just drives me completely nuts.
I think Ive pretty much listed everything else I hate in reviews, but I like to chatter a lot.
See ya in the funny papers!!!

You know what I hate? When I have a one-shot and people say something like, "more plz!" then add it to their alert list. I mean, I'm glad they liked it, but it's a one-shot. Meaning a story that's only one chapter. And it's even one of those stories that doesn't even have the type of storyline to make more chapters to.
I don't know. Just a slight pet-peeve.
