cop: Do you have any idea how fast you were going? me: "I've never been as strong as Nathan, but he says it's the other way around." cop: Uh... cop: Ma'am, are you on any medication? Liz: "I've never been as strong as Nathan, but he says it's the other way around." cop: No, seriously, medication?
I like this mental picture. It's making my Wednesday better.

I wrote something down real quick yesterday morning before leaving for work (I was running late, I'm always running late). I had thought of it in the shower and, of course, thought it was brilliant. When I got home and looked at it, all I could think was, "well, what the hell does that mean?" I couldn't for the life of me even remember how it would fit into the story.

It seems like that happens to me a lot - it's like time helps me beta my own stories. "Fresh Eyes", a friend of mine once called it.

I always get these kickass ideas for my fics on the bus, and then when I sit down at my computer, my drive to write deserts me as I realize how hard it is to actually put them in words. Drat! Really sucks as I'm trying to keep to a loose timetable I sort of set myself regarding my fics.

I think I have short term memory loss, because all day today I'd be thinking about my story, come up with a line and be RIGHT at my computer, then go to type it and *poof* it's gone. Ahah! So I'm not the only one.

Dude, wanna hear short term memory? I forget where the keys are while I'm driving and have a mini freak out in the car. Imagine me getting pulled over.
Cop: Were you writing while you were driving? Me: ...Mebbeh. Cop: Don't do it again. Get going. Me: Sure, just as soon as I find the damn keys. Shit! I think they're in my office! Cop: ....
Random about my writing - I shared an office and Joann has been on vacation for three weeks. Thus lots of goof off/writing time. She comes back and all my writing ideas went nuts. Of course I had to actually do work with her on the other side of the room. I hate that. But yesterday - when she was mysteriously gone - I got a full chapter written. Go figure.

Haha! That IS pretty bad. I once forgot where my watch was, but it was on my wrist. Oh! And I'm one of those people who puts pencils behind their ear (my reason is to keep from biting them) but then I forget where they are.

Dude, wanna hear short term memory? I forget where the keys are while I'm driving and have a mini freak out in the car. Oh my gosh, I do the same thing! So for an instant, I'm convinced that I am locked out of the house. And then I start laughing and my kids think I'm crazy. I also do that thing where I'm thinking while I'm driving, and all of a sudden I look around and am not sure what point of the journey I'm at (usually happens on highways where everything looks the same: Did I just pass exit 12? Am I still on the Thruway? Is this New York, or New Jersey???). Hahaha, glad to see (once again) that I'm not the only crazy person around here.

Liz, you and me are definitely the resident crazies. I'll lock the door before I leave and check my pockets when I get to the car to make sure I have the keys because by that time I think I have locked myself out of the house....again.
I think I will invest in a voice recorder. Laura has something there. Beats gum wrappers and the like, too.

I'm cursed with a 13 year old muse who thinks he is a big help when actually he is my nemesis. -banging head on any available object repeatedly- My youngest brother, Danny, decided to help me by cleaning out my laptop of all files early this morning, and fixing my profile on FanFic for me-----I lost all of my saved stories in the aftermath, including my newest one: Flirting With Disaster, which was accidentally deleted from FF by his nimble little fingers. He's grounded for life, and I'm having a nervous breakdown----that makes us about even. And it doesn't help any that Damien pointed out that I shouldn't use the same password for everything anymore, so I've spent the morning changing my passwords on everything including my laptop's boot up control. Now, four hours later, I am finally calmed down enough to have a talk with Danny about what he did. Wish me luck----or better yet, wish him luck.

Oh my gosh. I am so sorry, Des! That's one of my biggest fears - losing everything. Is there ANYWAY of recovering any of it?
I remember once, when I was about 13-14, I was trying to make more space on the computer my eldest brother had left to me before moving out. I was going through all those program files and saw things that I'd never heard of before and certainly had no interest in keeping... Of course, the things I deleted were things that kept the computer running period. Luckily I had an ex-uncle (by marriage) who was kind enough to piece it all back together for me. He sure gave me a stern talking-to about deleting things which I didn't know their purpose or function.
I'm sure Danny didn't mean to ruin things, but I do understand your pain

Oh my.
In case you're at the same level of computer literacy as me (i.e. don't know all the ins and outs, but can do what you need to get done) here are some suggestions from my husband:
1. Check the recycle bin on the desktop. Deleted files are stored there.
2. Windows XP comes with a "system restore" function that you used to have to upload, but it's automatic now. Here's the path:
start --> programs --> accessories --> system tools --> system restore
The idea is that you can turn back the clock - return your computer to a point in time that you select, but that has to be within a certain number of days. We used the uploadable version several years ago after getting hit with a bad virus that did a number on the computer. Rich took us back about two days, so the only things that were lost were files we had created within that two day period.
It wouldn't work for your fanfic profile page, but it might get your word documents back the way they were.
Good luck!
Liz

Yeah, there's ways of getting back those files IF the overly-helpful fellow wasn't terribly meticulous about deleting stuff to the point of nonrecoverability. And even if he did, there's ways of 'undeleting' even those files but it takes a crackerjack geek to be able to get THOSE back. Incidentally, this is one good reason to maintain backups, even if it's just on floppy disks. But wow, I feel your pain, Des. I really hope you can get your stuff back. (and even if he was being innocent about deleting your files, why in god's name would the rascal change your ff.n profile? I'd smack him for that, for sure.)

Thanks, Liz! But sadly, I run on Windows 98SE on my laptop since it's an old one, and I've tried everything to make sure he didn't just send them to another folder on my comp. He deleted them.
I'm just happy to have caught him before he deleted my other stories from FF, even though they are completed. Thanks to Damien's wisdom, I have now changed my passwords to everything so this won't happen again.
I've had a talk with him, and he now realizes what he did wasn't a very nice thing to do, and he admitted that it was intentional, not accidental. He was mad at me because I wouldn't let him go boating with a friend of his yesterday, so he decided to get back at me this way.
Damien is having a little chat with him now, so hopefully things will work out without my having to wring his little neck.
UPDATE: -dances all over the place- I found them still on my work computer! The first 15 chapters of it anyway, so I can at least pick it back up from there!
