I was posting on the Tim line, and I realised that the way Glenn Withrow acts in the movie actually effects my image of his character...but I never picture him when I'm writing about Tim (and very, very, very rarely when I'm reading about him). It's just...he's blond, lol. Just physically, I rarely picture the actors - but I love their interpretations. I saw the movie after falling in love with the book, and I actually really resented the idea of putting their faces onto the characters I had in my mind. I love the movie now as well, and occasionally it is nice to see Matt running around doing Dally-like things . But, I still always picture the characters the way I wanted to at the beginning (which was partly influenced from the book cover of the edition I used...the 1993 Penguin with the brick wall and the very, very, VERY good looking blond scowling at nothing, haha.) What are your experiences? (P.S. I've been thinking about these things too much...I hope I'm not repeating myself in this line, lol.)

They were so well described in the book thats how I always picture them. I really love Matt Dillon as Dally (who couldn't) but I always think of his original description when I read/write him.
Except sometimes in a fanfic the writer is clearly basing their image of Dally on Matt which can screw things up lol.
Tim I picture totally how he was described in the book - the model jd - loving it!
The one who was closest to the book I thought was Patrick Swazye as Darry - I so love him in the movie (okay he looked a tad too old for the part but hey).

I was just thinking about this the other day. I'm writing a story from Bob's perspective, and I just cannot use Leif Garret in my head. Now, the funny thing is, the combo-actor-imaginary-morph guy I'm picturing is way more similar to Matt Dillon. Does anybody else think he would have made a great Bob, if the part had been bigger? He fits the description to a T.
As far as all the other characters, I find that when I'm writing a fic, I have to force my brain to make up its own images. Otherwise, I'm seeing the actors, and because they are familiar and safe, it gets difficult to put the scary into them, or to make them sound true to the book rather than true to how the actors' voices in my head made them sound. Did anybody get that, haha?

Go on artemis! The more thoughts the better, lol.
A thirty-year-old Patrick Swayze with a bunch of boys...yeah, he did seem a bit too old. But, I thought, since we see him through Pony's eyes in the book, and I think the movie is supposed to represent that since we follow him around a bunch (except when Dally's being, you know...crazy at the end)...anyway sorry, that sentence didn't make any sense grammar-wise. What I mean is, I think it's okay that he seems that much older, partly because I think his character did just age that fast, and partly because we're seeing him a little through Pony, and partly because Patrick Swayze is hot.

lol your deeper than me I always just thought he was hot! I agree with you though, about seeing him through Pony's eyes I never thought of it like that but it makes a lot of sense. How cool is this board huh! I love seeing everyone elses thoughts on the characters.

I've always pictured the same boys as I did when I first read the book. I'm lucky that way I guess. I know there are a lot of people who automatically will picture the actors used to portray characters, and I would be devistated if that happened to me, lol. On the cover that came out about 5 - 6 years ago, the purple one - there's the boy who I always thought was Pony, but come to find out many people think is Johnny (I figure it's Ponyboy since he's wearing the blue sweatshirt with the sleeves cut short) ... and he looks identical to my cousin Ryan. When I first picked up that cover (I was introduced to the book with the brick wall background) I hadn't seen my cousin in about two years and didn't think anything of it. Later that summer I went up to Washington to visit his family and I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw him. Ever since then, I equate my cousin to Ponyboy. Sad, huh? I even showed the cover to my mom and asked her who she thought he looked like and she immediately said, "Wow. That's Ryan." I swore up and down for the longest time that they had to have posed him for the cover, it's that identical, but alas, I'll never know because I won't ask

"Combo-actor-imaginary-morph" - lol! It's funny, physically I could almost switch Leif Garrett and Matt Dillon's parts. Physically, just physically, lol, I heart Matt's acting too and all that. What does "put the scary into them" mean? Lol, it must be funny to have a real-life Ponyboy walking around you.

Oh, I was sooo mad when I saw the movie. The guy I always pictured as Darry was in the movie. He just played the intimidated store clerk....so mad. I was mad until I read Bill stepped into the role as a favor to the director. So he was never considered in the role I pictured him in. Mind you, he was getting older at that point in time, but still! My fourteen year old self was crushed.
His TV side kick Peter Brown was always Steve in my mind. The rest were just made up faces in my head with a little help from the brick wall cover - I think most of us started out on this one.
Goes to show what a great thing an imagination is.
See ya in the funny papers!!!

I remember Kris and I had a discussion about this years ago. He thought that Wil Wheaton would have made a good Ponyboy if he had have been the right age and all that.
I personally created all new faces for them all. I've never been close to what they looked like in the movie. But I do remember Tens being upset about Bill for years....

Will Wheaton so would have made an EXCELLENT Ponyboy.....was he even born yet?! lol
artemisrex....I actually get a kick out of people who write Dally with Matt's physical features. It's like they never even read the book!
The one character I specifically can't change in my mind is Soda. Rob Lowe will always be Soda to me. Rob's features are so moviestar handsome just like Pony wrote about Soda that I only see Rob when I read him. The hair may be different but that's about it.
The rest of the guys I think have their own identity in my head versus the movie but they do intertwine sometimes. That's probably due to the fact that I've read the book and seen the movie more times than I can count over the past 23 years!! WOW!

I agree, Wil Wheaton would of been great. I prefer his acting over CT's, sorry CT! Yes he was born then, lol, but he was like 12ish at the time.
As soon as I saw the movie, my original faces dissapeared. I was so mad. It took me years to regain my original images of them. (Dally, Darry, Two-Bit and Pony) Though with the others I'll still see the actors.
Patrick was great, but I liked Boyd Kestner better as Darry.

Ooh, yessss!! I was hoping someone would bring up the TV show (I'm just getting through it now). The more I watch, the cuter Robert Rusler gets as Tim. Although, I really can't see him as Tim Shepard...just some sort of new character, lol. The guy who played Soda (Rodney Harvey?? Something like that...) was so *not* how I'd picture Soda (nothing against his acting). And the writing for either of them didn't seem really in character. And the girl who played Cherry kinda irks me... maybe it's just comparing her to Diane Lane, lol. I think my favourite character from that show might turn out to be Billy Bob as Buck, lol - though, even he isn't how I imagined him (what is with the counsellor/chaperone role?!). I think Pruett and something Ferguson...the guy who played Pony, I mean, were the closest to my interpretations on that show.

Did I miss something??!! Did they release the TV series on video??? If so, let me know!!!!
David Arquette as Two-Bit I think is a good fit. I don't remember the TV series enough to judge anyone else. Him I remember, though and I think that's because he just reminds me of what I think Two-Bit would be in everything he plays.

I didn't find the actors too different from the way I originally pictured them. Well, except Dallas. Thankfully, I have the blond pictured in my head once again. But I can't say that the first time I looked at the movie cover I knew who half of the people were.
There was a certain way I pictured Ponyboy. On the cover, who I assumed to be Pony looked exactly like one of my sister's ex-boyfriends from a long time ago, back when she was fourteen or fifteen. I mean, they could have passed as twins. So I pictured him like that. Lowe was pretty much the way I guessed Soda to look like, though, minus the hair colour.
And man, I haven't seen the TV series at all. Now I really wanna catch some episodes. Are they on youtube or something? I might look it up a bit later. Are the TV series character really that much better than the movie ones?
