Okay, so maybe I'm slow. Or maybe it's because technically, the only reason we know where The Outsiders is "supposed" to take place is because Susie lives in Tulsa and we know it is based on things that were happening in her school. But really, if we knew nothing about the author (or even though we do), the whole story takes place in a made-up location.
Moving on to what the heck I'm talking about - I JUST THE OTHER DAY noticed, while looking for something else entirely in the book, that in chapter 1 Ponyboy says, about Two-Bit, "He reminded me of Will Rogers - maybe it was the grin."
Totally cracked me up. She put the name of her school right there in the first chapter! Awesome. And yes, I'm slow. Twenty or so years slow ;D.

Come to think of it, I don't remember where I ever came to conclusion that the book took place in Tulsa. But Susie never came out and said it didn't, so I guess we're right about that. I always took Tulsa to be the "city" referenced in Tex as well. I don't know about Taming The Star Runner though.

The movie is clearly Tulsa -- shot in places Susie used to go. But you all knew that.
As a total aside about Two-Bit: I'm the editor for a monthly a/e magazine and we run a calendar section. I once got a listing that ended with, "For more information, call Keith Mathews at xxx-xxxx." I instantly thought, "Good, they spelled Two-Bit's name right" and then I was cracking myself up, because apparently, he is not only real, he grew up and is doing charitable work in central Massachusetts.
I actually e-mailed Liz and Tens to share that with them, I thought I was so lame.

Dude, I remember that! Man, Keith Mathews must get a couple chuckles from time to time because of his name. Of course that would only be from lame people like us, but hey! I think I would probably just sit there and laugh at him while writing out a check to whatever charity he was running while he gave me odd looks.
Ah, good times that will most likely never happen. Oh well.
Thanks for reminding me of that! I enjoyed my chuckle!

Hahaha! Remember, if he takes the key I want details! Man, I love this sense of dirty humor.
I think Two-Bit (I can try to get us back on track ) would have appreciated it! Something tells me he had a lot of dirty jokes/stories up his sleeve that never made it to the first draft. My characters are horrible for that. Dunno if that makes me even worse for writing it, but hey! Live a little!

Like the hat! I haven't finished scouring the DVD for all the extra features but I remember the bit about the hat. (And Dallas falling out of his chair was another, right?) Tens: Dirty jokes are the bomb! Yes, the bomb. Plus, anyone who has spent a lot of time with guys as one of the guys knows that boy oh boy do they LOVE to make dirty jokes. Guys in the sixties couldn't have been that different right? I think it's perfectly in character.

"Beer for breakfast there Two-Bit?"
I didn't think of Steve as much of a wise-a** until Tom Cruise, lol. I wonder if he improvised that stuff?

...had the same crazy, unhinged vibe. LOL, he's got that down pretty well nowadays. That's one of the reasons I don't like to know too much about the personal lives of actors. Although I was never a die-hard fan of Tom Cruise, I always thought he had some pretty decent acting skills. Now, it's so hard to see past the way he presents himself to the public and the media. I couldn't watch War of the Worlds and see his character as his character. I just kept thinking, there's Tom Cruise pretending he's somebody else. It kind of sucks, because he works hard at what he does and it shows, but I just can't see past him as a person any more, to the character he's playing. But yeah, he was really good in Taps. Liz

Wow...my first post!
Okay, I'm speaking for the first few posts while I say we know the book was based in Oklahoma, because Two-Bit says something about thinking all of the "Indians from Oklahoma have been tamed" after seeing Ponyboy's haircut. However, there are no hints towards it being in TULSA.
And Tom Cruise is one of my favourite actors. I can't help it, but I think he's amazingly talented. It's sad that some people think he's horrible.
Did you know he was asked to be Rusty-James in Rumble Fish but turned it down? I mean, I thought Matt Dillon could be the only passing Rusty-James. Ya learn something new everyday, huh?

I'll say this once. You have all been very bad and taken us completely off topic. If I were a good admin I would do something about it.
Good thing I'm me
I've never really been a Tom Cruise or Matt Dillon fan, to tell you the truth. I didn't follow any of them, really. Keira is a Rob Lowe nut, though... I have to wonder because she was a Soda nut first. I've often wondered if people only liked actors because they portrayed their favorite characters...
Anyways, let's call that my random thought for the day.
See ya in the funny papers!!!

Yeah, I liked the casting part on the DVD especially when Rob Lowe said he tried out for both Randy and Soda but he was glad he got Soda. I found that interesting! ;D

Lowe is far too handsome to play Randy...I don't think they could have found a better Soda.

Every post in this topic is awesome and some frikkin hilarious!!! Rob Lowe is the ONLY one I can see playing Soda...I actually found a picture of him in like US magazine or something and ripped it out and taped it up at work and just think he's Soda...I'm weird. Tom Cruise is a very talented actor (he was AMAZING as Lestat) but he is a strange guy. I sometimes can't even believe he was in the Outsiders. Two-Bit....what were we saying about Two-Bit now?? ps...I think the gum chewing just solidified Matt's roll as Dallas....he didn't care!! And yes, I'd give him the key, too!!! LOL
