Throughout my long and most likely unimportant stay at ff.net, I have run across very few male characters inserted into the Outsiders world. I think this has mostly to do with the fact most of the writers are female, but that's just my opinion.
So I offer up this spot to talk about why that is and list some of the male characters and how they worked or didn't work, if that is the case. So bring your men!
Yeah...
See ya in the funny papers!!!

Personally, I don't add new male characters cause the Outsiders is already bit of a sausage-fest. I'd rather just focus on one of the...what is it, ten? Lotta greasers, lol. Not that I don't think there's room for more!
I think writing from Tim's POV opens up the OMC world HUGELY for those who are creative enough to take advantage of it...sadly, not me, lol. I love Bill Pearce from his gang! It's either mars' or artemis' or both - sorry guys, sometimes it's hard to tell who started it, lol. Tim would need a second in command, and Curly doesn't strike me as up to the job. I like the older, experienced guy backing Tim, he "knows the score" as y'all say, lol, so he doesn't flip out when Shep does something iffy. Bill's easygoing nature balances Tim nicely, especially when he's in a quiet mood, I think. Pete and Carl and Ray are all great gang members, too. Curly's mini-gang, lol. I love that there are different "groups" within the Shepard gang. One of my favourite lines: "Shiiit, here comes the three amigos." (By the way, artemis and mars, it took me ages to find that between the two a yous and your gang stories, lol.)
Plus, Tens, you know I love your latest addition to the Shepard family. The step-sibling thing never occured to me; it seems like a really creative and believable way of introducing a new character. It has the bonus of not negating the canon situation.

I think I never crossed into the Male add ins because I haven't ever felt comfortable writing a guy. I grew up with brothers, but they were my only in site - and for those of you that know my brothers....well, they are NOTHING alike. So guys were always very confusing to me. So, because i try to write about things I understand - I don't write men very often. Maybe that will be my next big accomplishment? (ha - a new story would be nice first! Anyway, I think thats a big factor on ffn. There are a lot of teenage girls, and I think for that crowd, its just a matter of not understanding enough to add in their own guy. I've been happy to see the population changing to add variety - so yay to those who are willing to add in that famous "guy". Rock

I am admittedly a male character nut. I find them much easier to write than girls. I think I have at least five on the go, so yeah
I think that inserting a male character is all about where you put him. Like Zevie pointed out, it's pretty easy to manipulate the Shepard gang because there is so little on them.
You know what, I'll add more to this later. My aunt's computer is a piece of merde. Dial up, man...I am so going home....

I don't know why but I find guys easier to write than girls. It wasn't always like that but hey. In the stories I've posted I think I've only had one male OC in fandom... and Tens has used him more than I have, lol!
Suprise suprise, he's part of Tim's gang. Most OMC's I see are either part of Tim's gang or his buddy in some way. (Gather all the OMC's in fandom and the Shepard Outfit is one biiiiig gang, lol.)
My originals, are mainly about male OC's with either one female main character, or a few female minor characters(very minor).

The spell checker doesn't recognize them, so how can it censor them? Happy day, eh?

Artemis, I couldn't agree with you more. The cops do need a face.
I completely forgot about my boys in blue when I was counting up my OMCs. Pripich, O'Toole, Wills and Green were the authorities I created just for that reason. That faceless enemy just didn't seem like it fit. Not that I'm defending cops, because that is the last thing I'm doing, I'm just saying they all can't be out to get you.
See ya in the funny papers!!!

Zevie hit the nail on the head with all she said! I love Bill Pearce, too. And all the cops you guys have come up with do add a nice touch. In my originals I feel more compelled to write male characters. For Oustsiders fics? I guess we shall see.....

Writing about Tim as I do, it's inevitable that extra male characters have to be added. I tend to be pretty lazy and keep them to a minimum, they are just there to serve a purpose - "Tim's side-kick" "Tim's rival" and are basically generic hoods.
Although my other story I'm working on is from the pov of a cop - interesting how cops come up, but obvious I suppose! I've got heaps of back story on his character but I'm not sure how much I'll include. I like original characters who are there to provide extra insight into canon characters, if their own story starts taking over I lose interest. It's fan fiction!

I think artemisrex and Marsonfire have a real knack for creating original male Characters at one point in reading their stories I thought they were actually mention in one of S.E. Hinton's other stories I have yet to read and their Characters are also believable because they share each other characters and give them a back round all their own. For some reason I've grown to like Ray Roth.

But the bad guys are so much fun to read and write, too. You know the type - awful guys/girls, but fantastic characters. Angela's one of my favs in that role, lol, (not to mention Dallas, haha). Ray seems like that to me... I've said it before, I'll say it again, I love reading about Tim's gangmembers!

Well, I haven't really written a fanfic about Tim yet so I haven't created any gangmembers for him, even though it's fun to see what other authors come up with. I have one male character, Larkin, in As my Life turns Upside Down. I haven't really read about any other new male characters.

I've not even thought of making an original character ... male or female. For some reason, I've gotten it into my head that the canon characters are the extent of the book and should be the extend of fan fiction.
Lol. Maybe one day I can get out of that brain frame and try an OC. It would definitely be a male, though, since I can relate more to the male mind being a tom boy all my life.
