Writing Cherry

I wrote her a lot in my typically-embarrasing first fic, which took place during the span of the novel. Heh, it was basically the novel from Dally's point of view, but I added a bunch of scenes featuring Cherry (and cheesify-ing Dally and hers relationship).

I think I also wrote Cherry as being very self-involved, and naive in the way that she believes it's always about her. If someone's pissed off, it's because she did something to offend them, not because they might have other problems affecting them, and this sets off her defensive temper, or her sense of guilt.

She's not usually a bad guy in my stuff, she's always trying to help. She usually doesn't realise how much she's in over her head with the "war-games" she's playing with the boys. She realises that there are serious consequences for them, but not for herself until it's right on top of her. Everything makes her mad, but she never openly does anything - every action she takes to further her beliefs is covert, completely done in secret, so yeah, like the end of the movie, except I hadn't seen it then (but I think it's mentioned in the book?).

In short, I guess, the way I write her is as a typical over-confident and yet self-conscious teenager (you know - we've all been there right?) - with a temper, haha, and a romantic streak.

I have yet to write her in a mature way, though... Pretty much just stole what we see in the book, lol. Like I said, this was all in my first fic way back in '01 (holy crap).

I haven't included her in anything I've written, I wouldn't really know which angle to take with her.

On one hand she stands up to Dally, tells her boyfrind to get lost, etc. But then she tells Ponyboy she won't say hi to him at school because of what people will think.
She says she hates fighting then she acts as a go between for the rumble - she tells Ponyboy that she is just trying to help but given her comments on Dally it seems that she likes the excitement of it.

I guess she could be interesting to try and figure out lol. I so have to get that new version of the movie to see all the extra scenes...

I swear, you guys come up with the best thoughts. This is really interesting. Cherry is one of those characters that you have to write just right or everyone kind of balks at you. I have to keep that in mind for a future couple chapters in various stories of mine. It's hard to involve someone like her in a story without, as was mentioned above, making her seem snobbish or selfish or just plain standoffish. I mean, she's a cheerleader. She's gotta have an overly friendly side in her somewhere.

I haven't written about Cherry in any of my fics. I wouldn't even know where to start with her or how to write her. I think it's too easy to turn her into an MS.

well dont forget she said "things are rough all over " So things cant be as perfect as they seem for her.

I have not actually written Cherry...
But I am currently using her little sister, lol. So it sort of involves her family, but they're not the main characters.

I think she's an easy character to ruin. People tend to go to the two opposite extremes--either she is an awful, rude snob; or she absolutely adores greasers.

Unless it was a loooong time later, and she met, say, Ponyboy, by chance. And pre-novel, she'd only be there in snippets, as she hadn't met any of the gang yet (with the possible exception of Soda). She seems like a one-shot kinda gal.
