I've recently been reading books by Chris Crutcher (if you haven't read any of his stuff, I highly recommend him).
So right now I'm reading The Sledding Hill, which I think is completely awesome. I'm just about halfway through the book, and I just started reading it a few hours ago.
I'm dragging myself away from it for a minute to share this little quote, though, because it totally cracked me up. One bit of info - a couple of Chris Crutcher's books have been banned in several school districts, and I believe he was on the 2007 ten most banned authors list.
Here's the "clip"; for background, this part is about the first day in a high school's Really Modern Literature Class (you can only read books by authors who are alive), which is taught by the school's librarian:
"If you want to read fifteen books by Stephen King, you can read fifteen books by Stephen King, though I wouldn't recommend it because most Stephen King books are long." She reads off a long list of authors she likes: Grisham, Rowling, Blume, Hinton, Clancy, O'Brien, Crutcher, Curtis, Vonnegut ("but you better hurry"), Lee ("you better keep hurrying").
Note that he includes both Hinton and himself in the list, hahah. I thought that was awesome. I've thought many times, reading his stories, that he has that same talent for seamlessly combining humor and tragedy that Ms. Hinton's got, so that made it stand out even more for me.

I'm kind of late replying to this message, I know, but I only just remembered it was here Thank you a million times, Liz, for posting this because it got me into Chris Crutcher. I got The Sledding Hill out of my library and I've been reading his stuff ever since - Deadline, Staying Fat For Sarah Byrns, Running Loose, and Whale Talk. My favourites so far have been Deadline and Whale Talk, with Whale Talk on top of the list. I've loved all of them, but those two just touched me so deeply. Every single book of his that I've read after Whale Talk I've said to my dad, who's been reading them, too, "It's good... but not as good as Whale Talk was." You guys, take my advice. Don't read the blurb of Chris Crutcher's books because that makes them sound horribly boring and not worth reading. Just pick one up and start reading it - you won't regret it.
