You know, I like all of the beginnings so far. So kudos to all you creative people. My only comment is for Ash. You know where your weakness is, but don't let it stop you. There's always a good place to start and this is it.
And because I am totally a bad upater, here's another start off the top of my head:
Today was one of those days I was sure I lived in a snow globe. Not literally, but it felt like someone had picked up my entire world, shaken it, and watched the pieces fall where they may just for their own amusement. My dad, the English teacher, would have loved hearing my metaphor on the situation, but I wasn't going to share it with him. After all, it was his fault the world shook today.

Tens, that is awesome! So much info in so little space, and it opens up so many questions. I would definitely keep reading if that was the opening to a story.

hey, i actually finished a chapter for that story that i wrote from the beginning i posted here. i have chapter two set down solid in my head, i just have to write it out, but it probably won't be until next month after nanowrimo. btw, it's set pre-book, in case there's any confusion on the time-frame. i had it in my head but i realized it's not too obvious until later on, so i put "pre-book" in the summary. www.fanfiction.net/s/4637362/1/He_took_the_midnight_train_going_anywhereand tens, you seriously rock at this. you should think about finishing at least one of them.

Eh, I don't really have an idea but I will have to say that to me, the beginning is probably the most crucial part of the story. The beginning should be the part to grab the readers attention. The beginning determines your audience, once you have that audience, then they will be more likely to keep reading and be willing to read more "out there" stories.
Well, that's just a possibility, not a must. But still, a lot author's don't seem to recognize things like this. : (
