So yesterday evening, Darcy, my 73-pound German shepherd mix, was charging around the living room like crazy, as she often does, making turns on a dime, and all of a sudden she was yelping and wouldn't put weight on her back left leg.
She still wouldn't put any weight on it this morning, so I took her over to the vet. Apparently, she either tore, or partially tore, the ligament inside of her knee joint. It's the dog equivalent of the ACL, just with a different name.
They would have to do surgery to fix it, but we're first going to try 4-6 weeks of anti-inflammatory, rest, and glucosamine HCL in the hopes that her knee begins to form enough scar tissue to carry her weight.
Poor thing. I had all these plans to do a lot of hiking this year with her (and the rest of the family, of course). Now she'll have to stay home. I'm really hoping the glucosamine helps. We're going to have them do the surgery if she ends up needing it, but it'll cost around $1500.

That's horrible! Poor doggie. Surgery is no fun for anyone -- or 4 - 6 weeks of rehabilitation. I hope she makes a full recovery and saves you a little bit of cash Give her some loving pats from me.

Poor Darcy! From the title I was expecting some horrible dog attack, so I'm kind of relieved, but still! That doesn't sound fun, especially when she's used to using those four legs.
Glucosamine works great, so hopefully she'll be on her feet, all four of course, in a few weeks.
