He definitely did NOT go over the top. He played it true. I think he is a very underrated actor. He is greatness.

Aw, he went over the top. Dally *is* over the top. Ergo, Matt Dillon is Dally. It's a passionate, real, er, raw (heh, I guess I like that word, eh?) novel, so anything less from the actors wouldn't have rang true with fans. I love the improv air - a lot of the things the commentary pointed out as improv to me I was like - didn't they tell him to do that? BUT, NO. It was all him...

Well, yeah....I just meant that he didn't go over the top so as not to be a believable character.
Greatness SHOULD be an icon!
I wonder if he would ever read these posts.....imagine??

I'll probably have some angry people busting down my door, but I think it's time we exercised a little more self control on threads. I have nothing against straying off topic for a while, but to go off topic for the sake of going off topic is a little ridiculous. I'm thinking people will go to a certain thread because they're interested in that topic, not going off of topic I need to work on this as well, so no worries, anyone. I am sorry that I deleted a bit of garble, but I do think 2 1/2 pages of it is quiet enough I'm thrilled there's an entire thread for Matt now It's been long past needed, lol. I'm also hoping people now know that it's an option to create threads whenever they please, and I encourage everyone to exercise that authority.

Haha. Good to know.
Speaking of commentaries and all, I think one of my favorite parts is at the beginning when Tom Cruise goes to do the backflip off the car and doesn't land right. Rob Lowe talks about how that was a complete accident and that they now decided to kept it anyway, like when Matt's chair tipped over at the movies and they kept it in as well.
Rob also provides the saddest bit of information when he spills the beans about what becomes of Soda later on. I was literally paralyzed the rest of the day. I actually had to fight off crying for a while. Lol. Not that it's any laughing matter of course. But there's also been a lot of controversy on that as well -- whether or not Soda actually dies or if it was the kid who he was loosely based off of. Maybe that's something else Ms. Hinton can answer for us... *Not hinting. Nope. Not hinting. Okay, maybe just a little.*

The thought of that is heartbreaking, really.
Love that commentary, though. Good stuff.

Okay Keira, take a deep breath, and then read what I'm pasting in. I think you'll feel better . From Merlin Missy's Canon Versus Fanon Versus Authorial Intent: "Most authors know what happens next to their characters, who they marry, how many kids they have, that the grandkids are called Vera, Chuck and Dave. Their favorite breakfast cereal. How they're going to die. Some authors end up giving out all this information, either via writing it in the text or including it as an appendix in the back ala J.R.R. Tolkien. Some writers can't, because the medium (TV, film) won't allow it, but that doesn't stop them from knowing what they want to do. In this day and age, message boards allow them to share with fans what they intended to do, had they time. It's lovely and helpful for fans who want to know more. It is not, however, canon. The same thing can be said for authorial interpretation of the source material. Canon is what is in the source material. Reader/viewer interpretation is up to the individual, although the author may have intended something else entirely... ...Authorial intent tends to lead to fanon. After someone high-up involved with a series says "X is true," many if not most fans will follow in that direction. The problem comes in when authors change their minds, or projects change hands...J.K. Rowling said in a chat at The Leaky Cauldron that Luna "ended up marrying (rather later than Harry & co) a fellow naturalist and grandson of the great Newt Scamander (Rolf)!" However, in an interview with Today, she said she was "feeling a pull" between Luna and Neville. Authors change their minds, or events happen that change things for them. Until it's written, until it's broadcast, until it out there somehow, it didn't happen, at least not in canon." Here's the link, which I will also post in the "Links" thread: firefox.org/news/blogs/20/Canon-Versus-Fanon-Versus-Authorial-Intent.html

Thank you, Liz I really needed that, lol. It was equivilant to Sirius Black falling through the veil... except that one WAS canon. I usually don't feel too sad about Soda anymore... I still have my own version of what comes of him, and that'll always be fact to me, unless SE Hinton comes out and says otherwise.
