So, I've recently purchased and begun watching the "complete novel" version of the outsiders movie. I've only ever seen this one and I was wondering if anyone knew what the differences were between it and the original release.
Also, have you SEEN the ridiculous trailer that was released? It's on the special features of the 2 disc collection. Yipes.

The new re-release, IMO, is much better in terms of faithfulness to the novel and getting to know the various characters. However, where it falls down, I think, is in the musical score. An enterprising person could de-mux the audio tracks from the new version and the older version, and re-combine the music from the older one into the new one. 'Course that'd be a helluva violation of copyright and blah blah, but maybe Zoetrope will do it for us.

I do dig the new soundtrack alot although I agree, it did take some getting used to.
Did anyone else notice the scene after they cut their hair and are standing by the water is omitted from the complete novel?

I do like the new soundtrack... but it's too loud. Or is it just me? As bigtownavenue so eloquently put it, I feel as though I'm having the music crammed down my throat. I wish there was a option to turn down the background music a few notches so I could hear the dialogue better, as well as just not not feel as though they're going to break out in song at any given point.
However, I will always be a fan-girl of the original soundtrack. I purchase it off of eBay a few years back and I listen to it on my iPod every once in a while (when I'm not in the mood to listen to something loud and obnxious, which doesn't happen very often, but I make allowances for The Outsiders).
I can't remember if I noticed that they cut out the scene after they cut/color their hair. I'll have to go and check that out now. I do have to say, though, I liked that they added in Ponyboy's and Johnny's crying scene in the church. I was always upset that they cut that out. It's a powerful point in the book when we see for the first time how Johnny's handling the fact that he just killed someone.

Yeah, I've learned to like the Elvis-y musical score. The "Ponyboy and Johnny by the water" is now in the deleted scenes of the Complete Novel, so you can still watch it if you like.

I think I would take the Complete over the original just for the simple fact that it's more true to the book. Those scenes needed to be there.

When I first bought The Complete Novel, I wasn't a big fan of the score... there were a few songs I liked and a few I didn't like, and there still is. But I'm glad they still included "Stay Gold" in there, because that was always my favorite song.
The one thing I miss from the old score would have to be the music when Dally was... running away, I think it was. For a while I was obsessed with that tune and would play it on the piano. xD

Good Lord, you guys are helpful! :)Thanks for all the info - I'm having trouble finding the original to watch, so if you have any suggestions, send 'em my way!
Also, for those of you who have watched the complete novel "with the greasers and a soc", does it seem to anyone else that the whole first section is Rob Lowe (and don't get me wrong and jump down my throat - I think the guy's rather amazing and certainly beautiful!) whining about how his scenes were cut from the original?

Yes, totally. But, as it's Rob Lowe, I didn't much mind. He said some funny things if I remember right...I remember him laughing at Matt for picking up the world's biggest stick and chucking it at the Soc car, lol. If I was Rob Lowe, I would be whining, too! Not just that his scenes were cut, but he was like, 17 at the time wasn't he? If he'd been working for awhile, and was a little older, I don't think he would have been whining as much, lol - but the memory of being 17 and being insecure already and then having all your scenes cut must be pretty raw.

I agree zevie. It's pretty tough if you've worked hard on something and then they just cut it out, particularly as he was just starting out. I love the commentary though, Tommy Howell was just great and made me laugh a lot. I haven't listened/watched to the commentary in a while, I may have to revisit it Another Illusion

I really liked the comments too and I understand Rob's complaints - especially, as you pointed out, Zevie, since he was so young and the memory must have been "raw" (btw, great word!). I just thought there was a lot of time put into pointing that out when there should have been more comments on the actual footage itself, especially the new footage.
The "world's biggest stick" comment was pretty hilarious, as were a bunch of CTH's comments. He really livened up the commentary. Patrick Swayze was kind of a downer.
I think I'm going to watch it again tonight - I only got about 3/4 of the way through before I fell asleep. X(

Patrick Swayze wasn't very talkative I noticed, but one of his lines early on made me laugh out loud-intentional or not. It was something like "Will you please shut up? I'm trying to see if any of us can act." I don't think it was supposed to be funny but it made me laugh a lot at the time. Another Illusion

That Patrick line had me laughing, too!
I loved Rob's comment on the biggest stick and also Tommy's comments on Matt's over-acting some parts! Too funny.
I'm itching now...I haven't watched in in at least 3 weeks and now I have to see the extras again.
I totally enjoy the casting process. That was great! And it makes me so glad knowing that they really did make the right choices in picking the actors (in my opinion) correctly!

No kidding! There's a few movies out there I need to add to my collection and that is one of them. I wish all the characters could've done the commentating (is that even a word?!). It would have been interesting to see Tom Cruise up there jumping on the couch and whatnot! lol
