I'm going to blatantly abuse the privelege of having a group of writers from all over the place right at my fingertips. I need some surfer terms--other than saying 'dude' a lot--for an original story I'm working on. It has nothing to do with The Outsiders or fanficton, and I'm sorry about that, but...please? I promise that I'll keep them in mind in case I ever...uh...send the greasers to the beach?
I basically need, well, the basics. What's the thing called that attaches you to the board? Do surfers really say 'dude' that much? etc.

Oh, surf terms.. Wait, before I can get started, what time period is your story set in? 'Cause if it's set in the 60's, I know a site with a whole bunch of surf terms from then. -why I know of the site, don't ask-
But another word other then 'dude' you hear a lot on movies is 'righteous'. "Like, that's righteous, dude!" And 'tubular', that's another one surfers say a lot on movies. Hm... Does anything attach you to the board? I thought you just stood on it?

No, it's set present day. And yeah, there's usually a small black cord that has an ankle attachment that you put on so that if you go under, you won't lose your board.
Do you know in what context the word 'tubular' is used?

The thing that attaches to your leg is a leash. Yeah, I know, it seems like way too simple of a name right?
These sites are full of surf terms: www.surfing-waves.com/surf_talk.htm www.riptionary.com/
And for the tubular thing, I personally don't think modern day surfers use that term. It just seems kind of lame, cliché, and outdated to me... but, hey! I don't know any real surfers, so who knows?

Yeah, I don't know any surfers either, so my words should probably be ignored. ^.^;; But, in the movies 'tubular' is about the same as 'righteous'.

I saw this and thought, ''Well that sounds worth reading." I'd never really considered it before but the things Sharpshooter said are about as accurate as I can think of; however, seeing as I'm basing the accuracy on movies, like Sharpshooter did, I don't know if they're outdated or not. Is it the story you've told me about?
