I hope this isn't a stupid question but since reformatory schools are mentioned alot in outsiders fan fictions I was wondering are they an actual school or a jail for juvenile delinquents. Also does anybody know how the Reformatory school system work ?

They were a little of both. The system had classes, but they were rarely taken advantage of by the inhabitants since most were there to do their time and get back on the streets as soon as possible.
I couldn't believe some of the things I've read in articles on Google about them. It seems that they were a way for the more sadistic people to have a field day with the kids that were sent there since there was no such thing as prison reform and rights then. These kids were more or less at the mercy of the guards and the warden the whole time they were sentenced to be there, and a lot of the gangs that were on the streets rebanded inside as a means of protection for themselves and their friends.
I'll have to go through my saved html's and find the links for a few of the articles. When I find them, I'll edit this and add them here.

Glad to be of help. A friend of mine was in Juvvie for 6 months back in the 70's and he said it was like fighting your way out of a jungle. I'm not sure if it was the same in the 60's since he was too young then to be sent to Juvvie.

Sleepers was a really good movie, its actually based on a book written by one of the four boys - the book is pretty depressing reading though. If you wanted some more insight into the juvenile justice system I'd recommend "Little Boy Blue" by Edward Bunker. Although it's set in an earlier time period - the 40's/50's, it shows how hard it is once kids are in the system for them to get out. The auther himself has served about twenty years in prison and started out in reform schools. p.s: Little Boy Blue is seriously bleak reading though, just to warn you

As soon as I started reading this thread I thought of Sleepers. That was a harsh movie. Sad. I did love the justice, though.
Des, definitely post some of the links here. It would be interesting to read.

I thought of Sleepers, too. I never saw the movie, but reading it gave me chills.
I'm with you, though, Fosterchild; the third part of the book was well worth the first two sections.
And the links would be much appreciated, Des. Thanks.
