I want to use a bad storm in a story I'm writing but tornadoes seemed too rare around Tulsa. A hurricane would fit in though, right? Not too many people consider it, but I think our characters would have had to deal with it.
In particular I was thinking of using Hurricane Carla in 1961. The rain it produced led to significant flooding in Oklahoma and since Tulsa is right near the Arkansas River, wouldn't it be logical that area's of the city were flooded?
I'm still researching, but I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone had thought about using it, but found a reason not too.

Ooh, a hurricane would definitely be cool. (Well, uh, not like that.) It probably wouldn't effect Oklahoma directly like it would, say, the coast of Texas or Louisiana or something like that, but they'd definitely feel the effects of it.
When Katrina came through, it was so powerful that we got offshoots from it here, and I'm in northeastern Illinois. o.O
I think meteorology is so cool. That kinda stuff interests me so much ... especially severe weather. Storm Stories is like, one of the best shows on TV. And of course I'm saying that while we had just a tornado here on Thursday and I was scared senseless, haha. :p

I don't know much about hurricanes, but I can tell you that Oklahoma gets thrashed by dozens of tornados each year. I've said it before elsewhere, but my bosses have a sub-division of our work in Oklahoma City (which is about 2-3 hours away from Tulsa) and more than a few times I'd be talking to one of them on the phone, from inside their hotel room (the only place they had to retreat to) and my poor boss would be looking out the window going, "Keira, if you could only see how close this was..."
I truly don't think a tornado in Tulsa would be out of the ordinary. They get stormy weather all over the state from what I can tell.

Tulsa does get some pretty bad weather. It's in the middle of Tornado Alley, so they get some (though most are in North Texas) but a hurricane wouldn't likely happen. If a hurricane comes Oklahoma's way it would hit the Texas coastline, and it would die out before reaching Tulsa, which is in Northeastern OK. North Texas even, would most likely only get rain. But hey, i'm not a meteorologist, so what do I know?

Right, a hurricane wouldn't actually "hit" Oklahoma, but if it was heading for the Texas area at all, then they might get some offshoots from the storm, like heavy rain and potential flooding, maybe cooler weather if it was still warm out.
Like I said, when Hurricane Katrina hit, it cooled off considerably here and we got a lot of rain as a result of it ... and I'm all the way in Illinois. So, I guess if that tells you anything, lol.
It would probably depend on the strengh of the hurricane, too. Like, if it was a category one, then they might not get anything at all. But if it was a category five ... then yeah, definitely. :)
