It's a yard right? You know the grassy/leafy/treey area outside your house you call it a yard? Not a garden or a lawn?
Would you say footpath or sidewalk? Or something else...
Two things that have been bugging me lol.

I'm American. It's yard, for the most part, although a lot of people call it a lawn, too (that's mostly for the front yard, though ... I've heard 'front lawn' about a million times but I've never heard 'back lawn,' lol).
And garden is just ... where the flowers grow, lol.
Most Americans say sidewalk. I've heard footpath, but not in the same sense as a sidewalk. Footpath is more like a trail or a path in the woods or something. But even then most people just call it a trail or a path. Lol. Americans truly are lazy -- we'd rather say "path" than strain ourselves with "footpath." :p

I'm Canadian. The only time, basically, that I use the term "lawn" is when we talk about mowing the lawn, lol.

I'm from the Midwest, too, and that's pretty much how we are with "lawn" and "yard." I'm from the Chicago suburbs and I'm thinking it probably varies between here and the city. Kind of like how people who live in the city call the front room in their house the "front room," while I hear most people from the suburbs just call it the "living room." :)

I'm a Canadian gal, more specifically Albertan, and we have some odd sayings.
Now, this is going to sound lazy but we call the front yard "the front" and the back yard "the back".
"Going out back...", "I'm gonna mow the front...." and so forth.
This lawn word you speak of sounds intriquing....
See ya in the funny papers!!!

New England, here, technically the suburbs of New York City, somehow, and we mostly say "yard." The only time we really say "lawn" is in reference to mowing it.
Heh, about that "living room"/"front room" thing, we just say "living room," although I do know a few people who say "parlor."
Cheers!

Ha, I've never heard parlor before. That's kinda neat, though.
Oh, we sometimes say "going out back," too. And sometimes if we're going into the front yard we just say, "going out front."
At our new house, though, we don't really have a backyard -- we do, sort of, but our deck takes up most of it, so we mostly just say, "I'm going out on the deck," lol. :)

There's another one - living room. I would say lounge room. I thought a parlour was like a food storage area so I guess I'm way wrong there lol.
Would you say sofa or couch? In my fanfic I always say sofa because somehow I've got it in my head thats what Americans call it.

Probably couch over sofa, but everyone will know what you mean anyway. Sofa wouldn't faze me. But, I'm Canadian. It's well documented that we say "chesterfield".
*Gets lynched by angry Canadians*
Just kidding.

I hear "sofa" sometimes, and, on occasion, I say it, too, but mostly I call it a couch. "Sofa potato" just doesn't sound right. Then again, my mum is from around Boston, and I think that she says "sofa" most often.
A pantry is what we--or I, anyway--call a food storage area. Or just a cabinet...
Then again, perhaps I just know some strange people. One of the people that says "parlor" also says "porridge" and "fleurs." Me, I just say "oatmeal" and "flowers." Now that I think about it... she also says "carmel" and "catsup"...
Cheers!

Lol. Well... maybe you're just asking the wrong demographic. I certainly wouldn't know anything about the southwest.

I think it's kind of 50/50 where I live ... I mostly hear "couch" around here but there are a lot of people that say "sofa," too.
I've never heard "pantry" in my household. We mostly just say "cabinet." But for some reason lately I've found myself saying "cupboard," lol. :p
What about "linen closet"? Does anybody have another word for that? My family mostly just calls it the linen closet, but most of the time we shorten it just to closet. So I don't know.

Our pantry is really a closet under the stairs, the cabinets are all upstairs, and I also hear "cupboard" sometimes.
Yeah, we say "linen closet." In fact, the linen closet is in my room... which is why I have no closet of my own...
Cheers!

Oh, that's unfortunate. D:
I have a closet, but like ... we haven't rearranged my furniture yet (after living in this house for almost three years now, heh), so my TV blocks half of it, and so I can't get to like ... three fourths of my closet space, lol. It kinda sucks ... :p
