well I was also thinking that on some track teams travel and stay over night that would also be a good story and maybe a good reason for Soc/Greaser/Middle class interaction.

guys don't forget that the greasers could also hang out at Jay's which is another drive-in food place as well as Dingo is.

As far as I can remember, I only used the Dingo once, and that was for an emotional breakdown for Two-Bit.

I try to use the Dingo and Curtis house --except when writing about the Curtis brothers-- sparingly. Tim hangs out in a bar, and a pool hall/bar. I've used the bowling alley, a salon, the grocery store, detention, Two-Bit's house, etc. AI

When I set stories a couple of years in the future, I tend to invent stores/hang outs on The Ribbon (from That Was Then, This Is Now). You have everything open to you then. You can invent shops and clubs and still feel like they could be considered canon.

I don't have a copy of That Was Then, This Is Now, but was The Ribbon a big thing in that book? Because it was never mentioned in The Outsiders. What exactly was it? A road for drag racing? And what kept non-drag racing cars off it?

The ribbon was a stretch of road where there were a lot of places where teenagers hung out.
From Wikipedia: "The Ribbon A street in Tulsa, known for Drag racing and a number of restaurants and other hangouts. It is referred to in That Was Then, This Is Now and Rumble Fish and even Tex makes a brief trip there."
It was not uncommon in the 60's for teens to pull their cars up to a red light and indicate to the person who pulled up next to them that they wanted to race. When the light turned green, they would both take off and try to beat each other to the next light.

Dude, it's no uncommon for people to pull up to a red light and do it now! My uncle has this classic Trans Am and you can bet that we had a lot of fun with that thing while he was away. It's souped up to hell and one nice ride.
As for the the original point of this thread, the Dingo in stories as a repeating place, I'm guilty. Finn works there, the boys go there for dinner, it's mentioned in all of my stories, I think...So I'm bad. I have invented a place - a diner. So I suppose it all evens out.

When I was in high school and only barely got my license, my oldest brother John was taking my friends and I to Jamba Juice for smoothies (I still needed an adult in the vehicle, hee). We couldn't all fit in the truck, so our friend Steve also drove his car. We pulled up side-by-side at a stoplight and he decided he wanted to race. My brother was vehemently against it, but I did it anyway... we went around a curvy road and I almost lost control of the truck... that's the last time I ever raced anyone.

You learned a vaulable lesson - don't do it unless you know the road.

That's just the thing... I did know the road. I just didn't know the truck and no longer have any intentions to. I like my Jeep just fine, thank you.
