Honestly, Travis and Jennifer....I can't see them together long. She hit me as a total flake and he's a bit too grounded to need her for long. Sure, she's a sister figure for him, but not the person he'll end up with, not the person he'll ever feel anything stronger for. She's doomed to be "The Practice Girl" for Travis in this new town.
As for Casey, I couldn't see her with Travis, either. She's too full of common sense and he's too busy thinking and listening to music and other waste of time activities. That, and I think if Casey found a horse who turned into a man, she'd be set for life. Until then, I can see her going through men like one goes through blue jeans - they may be around for a while, and you can see places that need fixing, but eventually, you just can't patch them anymore and you throw them out for a new set. Travis is probably looking for more of a connected relationship where he knows he'll be the one ending things, if things do end.
Wow. I am cynical.
Anyways, hope that helps. It's been a while.

I just finished reading this book for the second time today, so I figured now would be a good time for me to post my feelings on it I honestly love it. I like horses well enough, but I've never really had a chance to be around them and I don't know a thing about them, so I was a little scared about starting to read it. It's like when I read books centred around baseball - I know nothing about the sport, so I don't know what's happening during the matches (which take up a fair bit of the book). But Star Runner wasn't like that. It was simple, and yes, knowing about horses might help, but I liked it perfectly fine without the knowledge. Travis was such a great character. Well, I've yet to find a S. E. Hinton character I don't like, but his bitterness and his sarcasm always make me smile, especially when he's thinking about Christopher. As for Ken, I really liked him, too. He was like a rock of stability in Travis's life... once Travis got used to him, of course. One of my favourite lines was after Travis had thrown the phone, nearly hitting Teresa and Chris, and Ken later says, “You just look so normal it's easier to believe you're drugged instead of eccentric,” and Travis thinks that he's always connected the word eccentric with little old ladies living with hundreds of uncaged birds. Casey was also a strong character. I can't think of what I specifically liked about her, but I definitely liked her. Maybe it was her determination, and the fact that she had no sentimentality. She didn't love the Star Runner ("Hell, the day he stops jumping I'll shoot him") and how she fired Robyn like that. Very cool girl The one thing that I really didn't like was the third person POV. I think it would've worked fine in first person, but I guess there're some stories you just can't write like that. As for the writing thing, I know it sounds stupid, but I've always liked to think that Travis's book was, in a way, The Outsiders. Strange, I know, but I've always seen it like that, maybe with a few differences, but a version of The Outsiders all the same.
