This topic was interesting for me to read through since I'm having to get into the mind set of Robert Sheldon myself for No Second Chances. I've about come to the conclusion that he's not a bad person per se ... he just has a few hang ups that make him seem that way to the people who don't know him.
It's going to be an interesting journey the further into the fic I get and I have to deal with him on the same level I am dealing with the gang.

Hmmm, Bob Sheldon... Well, I've been writing a story about Bob (more on that later) so I've been rererereading the book, taking extra care to note everything said about him. I wanted to get both sides of him into it - the side that Cherry talks about, and the side that Pony and Johnny see.
I think he'd be a nice enough guy around Socs. I can see him being somebody who's very biased against greasers, mainly because of the people who he's hanging out with. I also view him as somebody with a quick temper, quicker still when he's drunk. When he's drunk he's a lot more likely to beat someone up, but I can also see him getting into a fist fight when he's sober. I can't see him jumping someone when he's not drunk, though.
Now, as for the fanficiton that I'm writing, I wanted a new POV on Bob, not a greaser's. So I gave him a little brother, Nicky Sheldon, who is one of my favourite characters that I've ever created. Nicky's only ever seen the nice side of Bob (well, they've gotten into fights, of course, but he hasn't seen the 'greaser jumping' side of him), but the story takes place a bit before and during The Outsiders and Nicky's view on his brother changes. It's mainly a story about three things - what Bob was really like, what his family went through when he died, and Nicky's view on greasers changing, as does his view on his brother.
I just wanted to try capture the two sides of Bob, and I thought a good view of him that slowly changes would be an interesting way to do it. I don't know if it is, though. I just wanted to get my two cents in (or fifty cents. This is the longest thing I've ever written on this) and hopefully I've added something to the conversation.
(Sorry, one more thing. Does is tick anybody else off that you can't choose Bob as one of the characters on ff.net?)

cooroo - That's really funny, because I'm writing a Bob story along the same lines - his younger brother is Chris in my story. After letting it sit for over a year at four chapters, I've just finally written a couple more chapters this summer.
I'm writing it in third person, but it's mainly from Bob's POV. Chris's POV comes in every so often to give the perspective of somebody close to Bob who doesn't always understand exactly why Bob does certain things the way he does.

That is strange! I'd love to read that story of yours. I just figured that everybody's seen him from Pony's POV - what about another Soc?

i wrote one of my one-shots as randy, right after he talks to ponyboy, and it's very bob-centric. bob is also in the fic i'm writing during nanowrimo, and it's from the pov of a girl he's trying to woo, so he's very charming. in fact, i think i've fallen in love with him as one of my favorite characters. not above tim and two-bit, of course, he's like number 4 on my top 5, though. of course, my little crush on bob may not last long if fosterchild and rileysmomma have anything to say about it...they've been threatening to send dally and tim to "beat the charming right out of him" el oh el

I actually like Bob, Randy, Marcia and Sherri (Cherry). I think a lot of people just don't understand that the Socs are not the villians of the book, sure what Bob did was wrong but I don't think he ever knew exactly what the outcome of his actions would be. The influence of alchol as well must have played a large part in the jumpings that he did with Randy.
No, I like the Socs and they are actually some of my most favourite people to write about because a lot of people don't write Soc fics, it's all Greasers.

No more hateful than the greasers. Switch the situation- the Greasers run around jumping people and causing trouble just for the fun of it. Bob's like that, just the Soc version- one night his fun just got out of hand. I don't think that he's actually hateful, I think he's just really misunderstood.

Well, Randy blames it on Bob's parents, and I think that may be true. His parents were probably not tolerant people. They didn't want Bob to be involved with "greasy hoods". I could kinda see how that would affect Bob in his life.

I took a more complex route with Bob in my fic, as I was trying to portray him as a sympathetic character, avoid cliches, keep his personality in line with what Ponyboy sees, and have certain events in his life line up just so, in order that the outcome of his last night is the result of several different stresses in his life colliding at the same time.
Was that all one sentence? I swear, I haven't been drinking tonight ;D.
