I've always thought of her as getting fed up with him and leaving....sort of a big blow up and stomp out of the house thing.
She is from a pretty rough neighborhood, so I can't really see her sticking around if her life isn't what she wants it to be. After all, Steve had to get his stubbornness and attitude from someone.

Hm... Man, I must be really bored, because I'm thinking up some pretty weird stories behind Steve's Mom. They're kind of complictated though, so I'm thinking they're not possible. I think her leaving or just being really submissive would be the most likely ones.
Oh, but maybe she's one of those scary women who -like someone before suggested- is so in love with her husband, can find justification for everything her husband does. I see her spoiling her husband in a way, feeling that he does so much for the family -by working and whatever-, that she would make sure he was comfortable and take care of everything for him. Like;
Mr. Randle: -comes home complaining and grumbling about work and gets himself comfortable on the couch after throwing his shoes off- Mrs. Randle: Aw, sweetie, do you want anything? -already knows what he wants and goes all smiley in the kitchen and gets him a beer and a sandwhich- There you go honny! How was your day at work? Mr.Randle: -ignores his wife and starts eating, reading through the bills, and starts grumbling about the amount owed- Steve: -sits with his arms crossed over his chest defiantly- Mr.Randle: I need another. -holds his empty plate and beer can up- Mrs. Randle: Honny, Steve, dear, will you go get your father more to eat? -sytares all lovingly at her husband- He does so much for this family... Steve: -doesn't want to do anything for his father, but doesn't want to upset his mom- Whatever..
I don't know, that's just what I imagine... ^.^;;

I always just sort of saw her as... not there. I always saw them as divorced or something. You know, that would make a good one-shot piece of fanfiction...

I actually didn't see Steve as having a mother around at all...
I'm writing a story (even though this isnt the main theme) that Steve's mother died and when she died (I think I wrote it as happening when he was around 12) his dad became completely detached/angry/cruel or however you want to classify Steve's daddy-dearest b/c he didnt know how to deal with his own griefwell enough to help his son...and that would be why dear little Stevie (one of my fav characters actually) came to have his screw you/cocky exterior. (I've always thought there were deeper reasons to Steve's attitude and that he was actually a very complex character but thats another thread..so guess where I'm going next ^.^)
I may be totally off on this whole Steve's mother thing, but I just thought it was believable and not too wildly impossible verging on an oh-so-common sue/stu/really bad story

A bump to a thread that hasn't been posted in in over a year, but who cares?
This thread is great! I'm in love with Steve, he's my favorite character- I write all kinds of stories about him in my mind! This was great to read, because it gave me a look into what other people think of the situation, and how it compares to my views on it.
I see her as there, but not there. She lives there, but only in the sense of it's her place to go if she's drunk and needs a place to snooze, it's the place she goes when she wants to see her son, or if she needs some money she'll make moochey-moochey with her husband. She knows what goes on with her husband and her son, and she does care- but she doesn't care enough to do anything about it. She was knocked up young, made a mistake and got married to an alcoholic controlling nutcase, and put up with it for a while because she had a baby to support and no where else to go. Eventually she just kind of wandered from him, and is making up for lost time, working part time as a waitress and partying and sleeping around (Maybe not a waitress, whatever- you know the lifestyle I mean). In the back of her mind she's thinking "Wonder how Steve is today- I'll call tomorrow and find out." But tomorrow turns into the next day, and the next day turns into the next week, and the next week turns into some apologies a couple of months later and a promise to call soon.

Hm....I really didn't think much about Steve's mom until I saw this thread. Maybe his parents are separated or divorced.I forget who thought of this, but I like the whole illness idea though. That could be another reason. The person who wrote a story about that just gave me and idea.
Anyway, there are a lot of possibilities-most of which were listed here, so I'm not going to list them again. This would make a great idea for a fanfic!

I've always pictured Steve's mom having him very young, and staying with her husband because of Steve only. I think she's pretty quiet, and is to scared to leave the relationship.

I always thought she was there, just in the background. I feel like she had such high hopes for Steve, but he disappointed her in some way that he doesn't realize. So she cares, but she has a weird way of showing it, and sometimes just doesn't. I also see a huge lack of communication between the parents and Steve.

I think I always just assumed that she was dead or that she took off... I mean, Steve's dad kicks him out, not his mom and dad.

You have a point, but see, my dad has kicked my brother out before, and my mom just kind of stood in the background like she wasn't a part of the scene.
