GARY STU
Gary-Stu isn’t particularly common in The Outsiders fandom, yet nevertheless here’s some info them if anybody out there is ever planning to add in male OC’s.
What is a Gary-Stu? Well, Gary-Stu is basically a male Mary-Sue. A male character that is practically perfect, that he has no flaws whatsoever and can please any woman, man and creature. (If only real men were like that)
Unlike the happy-go-lucky Mary Sue, Gary Stu tends to be brooding and aggressive. He rejects authority, ignoring the consequences of his rebellious or aggressive behavior. However despite his ‘bad boy’ ways Gary-Stu has good intentions. It’s really a wonder why he acts like such an ***hole, other than the fact to look cool. Flaws:
As quoted from Tensleep:
Names
Gary Stu’s are custom to having nickname’s to show how tough he is. Eg: Blade, Stone Cold… I don’t know, I’m guessing here, but you get what I’m trying to say.
Past:
Gary-Stu is a lot like Naughty/Angsty Sue. He will have a tragic and extremely distressing background that has made him tough and hard as nails, and a naturally born leader. *rolls eyes*
Pairing:
Since The Outsiders have few females Gary-Stu’s are usually paired with OFC, particularly Mary-Sue’s.
Sex Life:
Gary-Stu is hot, of course he gets laid! from whorish girls to chaste maidens.
Death:
Gary Stu will always be some sort of anti-social hero. He says he doesn’t want to be hero and want responsibilities but will go off save the rainforest people from the evil bunnies, and sadly survive. Though it is not uncommon for him to die in a heroic way and be worshipped and mourned world wide.
Appearance:
Like Mary Sue, Gary Stu will be incredibly attractive, and considered handsome among all the other characters in fandom. Gary-Stu will also acknowledge he is handsome and will be a total narcissist.
He will also have a ‘really cool’ scar to show how bad he is and how macho-manly he is. It’s also highly likely that Gary-Stu will have if not one, but various tattoos – Of course being the badass he is the tattoos will vicious animals and blades or something to that extent.
Feel free to discuss and add more!

You know, I've been accused of writing the biggest Stu on the site - which still sends me into fits of giggles sometimes. I know how easy it apparently is. I just have to wonder if we should add 'Princess' to the list of tough nicknames because I call him it enough...
Speaking of Stu'd victims, I'm pretty sure poor old Steve would have his fair share of moments if all the writers out there didn't hate him for being mean to Ponyboy. No one looks past the vibes this fourteen year old kid gets off this angry boy to look at the hows and whys of it. When someone does, I mean the story is usually just awe inspiring or it turns into an abuse Steve fest. I think that if more writers took Steve into consideration there could be so much more to work with in a story.
See ya in the funny papers!!!

On the subject of Steve, when I first read the book at 12, I liked pretty much all the characters (except Bob, but we didn't have time to see the side of him Cherry always talks about), Steve among them. Now, less then a year later (though I have had a birthday), I still love them all. : ) But I really like Steve and somehow I managed writing a story about him. lol. Still not sure how good it is, but I like how I've got so much room to work with him. : ) I hope I didn't make him a Stu. That would make me sad.
Also, I agree with marsonfire about Saint Soda. Ponyboy even said that "Soda was no innoncent" and I dunno if I have that quote right (I lent my book to my friend who lives about an hour away from me), but it shows that even Pony admits Soda isn't perfect.

I really like Steve, but I hate when someone starts a story about how his dad beats him, and he crys. Isn't it funny how only Johnny and Two-Bit are the only ones who seem to have mothers? And Bob. I'd like to see something about Bob's mom.
Where was I going? Yeah, Gary-Stus are bad. I haven't seen a lot, but when i see one I smack my head against the table.

Honestly, Gary-Stu's don't bother me much as MarySue's do. It does bother me when the canon characters are stu'd though.

I am on the verge of a huge Gary Stu right this moment. Actually, not really... I took the characterisics of a Gary Stu and split them up in between three guys and then prayed to God that it doesn't seem like a Gary Stu. I don't mind them much, as long as it's not too obvious. Sometimes it's just blatantly obvious, and I can't get past the first page. Although Dally himself had a few Gary Stu characteristics...

Ya know- I really hate Mary-Sues, but I haven't really seen a Gary-Stu to hate. I think I have ever only even seen about three male OCs to begin with- Tensleep's, Pepsi-Cola, included (and he is seriously NOT a Stu).
Mary-Sues suck, mostly because it's just downright WEIRD to have a girl joining the gang. I am guilty, my first story went like that, and I actually plan on continuing it... It's just a matter of if you make your character a sex object, a person completely SMITTEN by Soda, a chick who moved to Tulsa to escape her (dark) past (Yeah, that's the crime I've comitted with Joshlynn's story), a Soc who rejects the rich life... they go on and on and on....
Gary Stu's though, I don't think I've ever seen one to be sure.... I am actually making a story with a guy OC, Lucas 'Seven' Hayden to be exact. I ALWAYS take the Outsiders Mary-Sue/ Gary-Stu litmus test before I write anything about a new OC, though, no exceptions.
Steve.... I never even gave a frick about Steve before I started reading fan fiction, it's true. It's just.... I don't THINK that it even SAYS anywhere in the book that Steve's father abuses him, just that he kicks him out.... I don't know why everyone just assumes that Steve gets beaten up. That bugs me.
I dunno. Maybe when I post my first chapter of my story with my OC on Fanfiction.net, you guys could tell me please if he is a Gary-Stu? Or maybe I could post it on here, it's probably short...

You could definitely post it here first if you want some pre-ffnet feedback.
My theory about male OCs:
Considering the majority fan base for this book (young teen girls who are enraptured (and duly so, lol) by the greasers in Ponyboy's world), most of the stories by new writers revolve around a female OC having a romantic interaction with one or more greasers. Not much plot, mostly just the girl doing stuff with the greasers and either being saved by them, or showing off repeatedly how clever she is.
Don't get me wrong - there are a lot of phases in learning to write, and I don't think penning a Mary Sue story is any kind of tragedy. You need to write things all kinds of ways to figure out what works and what, you know . . . fails ;D.
Including a male OC, however, in a non-slash story, kind of forces you to drum up some kind of plot.

I just saw "Stone Cold" on the list of names and died.
Anyway, I can't say I've ever read a Stu and if I have, I haven't noticed. I have a habbit of picking really good stories. -shrug-

Hmm... I was thinking... would 'Seven' be considered as a 'tough' nickname? Really?

Hmm... I was thinking... would 'Seven' be considered as a 'tough' nickname? Really? The only possibilities my brain is producing right now are that the person dated seven women at the same time or can drink seven shots in a row effortlessly. Or maybe they can hold off seven people in a fight. For those reasons, a person with the nickname seven could be tough or tuff even. Maybe a little Stuish, but tough. LOL

LOL It all depends on where the nickname comes from, I guess. Like labellenuit pointed out, the name coming from the ability to hold off seven people in a fight at once is a little Stuish, but I think you could pull it off. If there's an insanely tough reason for him having the nickname, it probably wouldn't work, but since you're aware of not making him a Stu, it should work just fine. That's my two cents, anyway.

I don't know if Seven is a tough nickname, but it could be really interesting. I mean, you could generate a good/funny/jaw-dropping backstory for the nickname that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with being tough. At the very least, readers would probably wonder where the nickname came from, and another character would/should ask about it early on.

Thanks, guys Eh heh... Actually, he has seven middle names. His parents couldn't choose. Excerpt: Lucas: My friends call me Seven though. Ponyboy: (trying to be polite) Why do they call you that? Lucas: 'Cause I got seven middle names... why do they call you Ponyboy? Ponyboy: Er... because it's my real name? Lucas: Oh... -awkward silence- Okay, well I obviously don't have it in script form, but oh well... Thanks again for the input! DHF out.
