Oh, and all this with the "rhymes with..." is great. Pretty soon we'll all start leaving out the "rhymes with" part, and newcomers will be going, "Why the heck is everybody randomly talking about ducks?"

Really, FLames just tell you what's bad about the story or not even that. They just tell you that your story is bad and they hate you. CC is when an author states what he/she didn't like about the story and gives some ways to better the story, if you will. Pretty much everyone said that. And I understand your not asking what the difference between flames and CC is, and I agree with what you said.
Ciao!

I actually prefer to get some good con crit on my writing to the usual gibberish in chat speak that I usually end up with ... though I will admit that the last couple of chapters have had less of the gibberish than the ones before.

you know i agree with what tens said earlier if you've got nothing to show for it don't talk
I've gotten a few supposed CC's for my two outsiders fics and they really didn't bother me that much. Ok i lied they did. for several reasons actually.
one: from greaser to county girl was started two and a half years ago and I know the first couple of chapters suck. I'm over that. I'll fix them when i finish the rest of the story.
two: the great thing about ffnet is that it shows us which chapter you're reviewing from and this person reviewed from chapter one saying in one review that "i've only read the first chapter and skimed a couple more" before going on to say what was wrong. This was stuff that was mainly explained later which leads me to the third point.
three: First chapters are bound to suck so read the rest of the story, which in from greaser to county girl changes dramatically in my opinion, before you tell us what you think. from what i've seen of book and movie reviews in the real world they don't just watch part of the movie or read part of the book before reviewing so why is that alright for you to do online especially when there are more chapters written. I ask that from most of my readers. I ask that they read all the printed chapters before leaving a review.
Don't know if that made any sense with this topic but there you have it.

I know exactly what you mean, TK. I've read some of the reviews that are posted to other stories on ff.net, and a few of them were enough to make me want to hunt the reviewer down and shove a foot up their rear end and a book on proper etiquette down their throats.
There's no sense in being as rude as some I have seen, and all that does is show that the reviewer is a total jacka** and it alienates the writer and other reviewers who happen to like the story despite the "flaws".
I mean, come on, people! It's a fan fic site ... not a proper publishing house. Why get so bent over a few misspelled words or a run-on sentence? Most of the writers of these fics are kids and they haven't been given the chance to learn proper grammar or punctuation as of yet ... schools in my area do not even try tackling that stuff until high school.
Many of the reviews I have read have seriously influenced my decisions on writing sites to join. This one was made more attractive to me by the reviews I have read that were made by some of the members here ... and I am quite glad I did join.
As far as Flamers are concerned ... there's always going to be ego maniacs out there. About the only way to deal with them is to take the suggestions into consideration and let it go.

i know when i review, i always try to mention at least one positive thing about the story...kind of a good news/bad news type of thing...and i never call the author or the story "stupid" or "retarded" i try to suggest things, like..."try to remember that this story is set in 1966...so duran duran doesn't exist yet..."

People just get a little too obnoxious when reviewing. I've even seen some people try to 'plan' an attack to review 'bad' fan fic which I found to be really disturbing.
I mean, yeah, on FF.net, there is a ton of poorly written and mary sue laden stories but hey, most of these people are young kids so let them have their stories. At least they're making the attempt. All we have to do is skip through it. And yes, I roll my eyes ... if I see one more 'new girl in Tulsa' fic, I'll scream but nobody's forcing me to read it.
If you have nothing decently constructive to say then don't say anything.

Flamers (although rudely) in their way, tell what somebody can do to make their story better. But, I can't stand it when other reviewers and sometimes the author, attack one reviewer for giving constructive crit and that this story is "the best on the site". Please.

The Flames I was referring to had no con crit content whatsoever ... they were filled with name calling, derrogatory language, and enough spite to make the Hoover Damn burst upon contact.
And the thing that bothered me most is that they were made by established fan fiction authors who should know better and be more willing to help the writers that are just starting out instead of heckling them like that. All that does is put the author on defense and cause more words to be exchanged between them and the reviewer ... of course, some people have a liking for picking on other people so I shouldn't be too surprised that it happens in the writing world, too.

Good point. When someone does stuff like that, I start feeling sad for the author and I have read a few like those. Especially if the author was willing to learn how to make it better. That person needs to be put out of their misery. Sorry for the misunderstanding, I was talking about authors that insult those that give concrit.

I stopped reviewing because I found I couldn't keep it to myself. I'd start off okay, but kind of go off. I wouldn't be rude deliberately, but when you read 17 reviews on one chapter saying "Please use quotation marks and periods," then the author goes on for 8 more chapters not doing it, it's hard to be nice about it.
I'd rather have a flame that mentions something that can be improved upon, but is still a flame, than some of the stupid things I get.
Lately, people have taken to saying "Wtf?" "LOL" "..." or "Update soon" to me. The update soon one is quite funny since I mostly write oneshots. But I'd rather be called a stupid gorilla who needs to start using semi colons properly than get another "haha" review.
Hope that made a bit of sense!

I for one believe in critical and relatively blunt reviews, but I don't necessarily care so much to actually do so (don't ask). I only believe so because I feel like I shouldn't just sit around and hope that a good story comes, that's too idealistic for me. I think people should go around critiquing so that people can see what they've done wrong and make the best out of it and improve. I've actually had surprising compliant responses: they thanked me for being honest and pointing out the good and the bad.
But unfortunately, not everyone is like that. So I've kinda given up on the whole review thing: I just try to see and enjoy whatever I can...

I've been on ff.net for a number of years now, so I've received my fare share of good and bad reviews. I have to admit, as much as I like the good reviews, I would enjoy a little criticism every now and then. That way, I know what to work on in the future.
However, there are some reviewers who just don't know how to give criticism. They take a "bad" story and rip it up one side and down the other. Like one other person said, most of the people who write sister fics and new girl in Tulsa fics and stories like that are just kids who are having a little fun. I say if they want to write a story about a magical unicorn trotting down the streets of Tulsa and becoming BFFs with the gang, let them. After all, it is fiction, right?
