Almost the same thing happened to me, laughing, or at least something similar.
My entire life I didn't know the difference between "Your" and "You're". You'd think after 11 years of English classes I would, but I never got it. Then, I -think- it was IamOnlyMe explained it and I was like "Oh!" and was pleased to finally know the difference. But it was embarressing that I'd been doing something so simple wrong for my entire life, lol.
I write fanfiction because I can goof off and not feel bad. If I write crazy things that don't really make sense and aren't really in character with my own original characters, I feel terrible, like I'm cheating myself or something. Sounds stupid to say that I'm willing to do it with other people's characters, but I do. And because I think it helps me improve my writing. The more I write, the better I find myself getting, and so fanfiction is majorrrrr help.

Oh yeah, the same goes for me. The more I write, the better I get--grammatically and...um...contextually? Perhaps not so much with the vocab. :] Anyway, writing on a regular basis is a great thing for me, even in school it helps. I take a current events class, and we have to write summaries of news articles and I can just whip one out real fast and get back to struggling with algrebra, and that's always a helpful thing.

Good lord, I nearly had a heart attack when I read your post. Marauder and the Q is my FF.net account.

Haha, well, if it was you who told me, thanks! I remember you giving me good constructive criticism on my awful story Lies, and I always appreciated it.

Why do I do it? Mostly because I have this issue with coming up with my own stuff. I can come up with my own characters on my own, but when I get to plots, I'm stuck. Correction: when I get to GOOD plots, I'm stuck. Yet, then, when I use someone else's characters and settings, the plots just come flowing right to me. I know, it's weird. ;D

I do it because it's an excercise in writing, especially with prompts. Plus, it's nice to fill in gaps or moments in time with these beloved characters.

Like Nittanylizard, I've always been the kind of person who will read a book or watch a movie and instantly think: What If? Even as a little girl, I would try lie awake at night to make up stories. Usually very dramtic ones, too. At one point, actually, my sister and I would lie awake for hours making up stories about Star Wars. So when I found Star Wars fanfiction, there was no going back. I was soon reading Harry Potter fanficiton and once I started to write, I just couldn't stop. Thank goodness I only ever posted one of my stories from that time, though, and that was probably the best one. The others were major Mary Sue stories. What? I was eleven and didn't even know the meaning of 'Mary Sue'! My dad, though, is one of the people who... intensely dislike the idea of fanfiction. The word 'hate' is too strong, but he's always making comments about it He'll still read my fanfictions, though, and I always get good criticism from him. What have I learned? Hmmm. I think, if anything, I've learned (and I'm still learning) how to keep people in character and how to make up original plots. I've never wanted my story to be like all the others on ff.net. At least, I hope I've learned these things. Like I said, though, I'm forever learning when I write.

I just like to write ... whether it is my own characters or someone else's. And *wicked grin* it gives me a chance to chat up my beta on a regular basis. Writing can bridge a gap like nothing else ever could.

Why do I write fanfiction?
Well, there are quite a few reasons for that actually:
- The first being the obvious, it interests me.
- When talking about the Outsiders in particular, well it's because it's the very first book I've ever enjoyed reading to such an extent that I even remembered it 2 years after when I first stumbled upon fanfiction.net. It's because of this book, I've read more than three times as many books in the last six months than all the books I could remember reading. 12 vs. 4 if I remember correctly, and I mean "actually" reading and not BS-ing through them
- In terms of my writing/reading ability, I can safely say that I've improved so much over the last few months. I still re-read my old stuff all the time and they sicken the crap outta me (not just my fanfiction, just writing in general). Basically, I can feel my abilities as an author improve and it feels amazing to me.
- The community. I've spent the last 8 months of my life hovering over the Outsiders fandom that I feel "connected" to it, if that makes any sense.

You hate your own stuff, but then you realize it's because you can see what's wrong with it now, so it's worth it.

That's almost the only reason why I read so much books now, to expand my literary horizons and better myself as a writer. And I can safely admit that I have the Outsiders to thank for this "feeling" - it's so fulfilling.
