Tens, I have the same problem. The way you put it is accurate - like being left out of your own story.
I think I'm finally getting the hang of it, though. It's a fanfic I'm experimenting on right now because there's an original I'd like to do in third person. Just a few days ago something finally clicked, and I'm feeling almost like it's in first person. I add in lots of italics thoughts, which helps because they come out in first person.
No writing tonight, though - I'm feeling nauseous, hubby is throwing up, and little girl threw up all over the upstairs hallway a little while ago. I was up in the middle of the night last night with the oldest child because he threw up on the floor in their room, and he stayed home from school today.
I am so glad I'm not one of those people who throws up at the smell of vomit. I'd be in bad shape, hahah.

there was a lot of throw up in that last message Nittany, The way I see it for third person PoV is that an outside person is telling the story as if they're watching it. Like when you're telling someone what happened on a tv show. You describe the show and what happened as if you were there but not really there. Hope that made some sense.

I rarely think that I'm going to write in a certain POV because my way of writing is very loose and not the most professional type. It's fan-fiction though so in my books it's okay (I almost said Bucks lol).
I like to write my first part of my story in a POV I think will work best and also in a characters kind set I think will work best e.g my recent fic is one of Two-Bit that I play on the RPG board, I then decided to make it from a Kathy POV and that was all sorted. I wrote around 850 words in first person, Kathy POV and left my work for around 2 weeks. After said two weeks a new character came onto the RPG board -- Amber Kemp. From one character been made my whole story changed. Now I'm looking at a 3000 word first chapter that was easily wrote in first person, now, Two-Bit POV.
Personally the best way for me is to leave my writting and then come back to it if I dont feel its working for me but I have nothing else to go on at the moment in time. Improving my writing is big for me right now and small things like this make your brain think a lot more and your writing chooses itself more easier.

I don't really have a preference for one particular POV when I read or write. I go through phases where I favor one more heavily than another, but overall, I kinda like all POVs. For me, a lot depends on the type of story I'm writing, or the effect I'm going for, or simply the protagonist. I personally like to have the story in first if the plot if more character-driven than event-driven. That way you really get to see the character's changes and internal struggles from a firsthand perspective.
And I don't know about others, but a lot of times the character I'm writing about determines the POV I write in. If the character is spacey and their head is all over the place, sometimes I steer clear of first and opt for third. As a challenge to myself, I'd like to write something in first where the character's thoughts jump like crazy and still have the ending result of my writing make sense. lol

I had a big thing with 1st POV but after recently trying out 3rd POV I just can't get into any of my OC's heads when I want to write them, give me a CC and I'm all for it but the OC is just so much harder.
Poor planning? Not enough discroption or background? Probably.

Before, I used to write solely in 1st Person, but I've recently decided to focus more on a 3rd Person but on a very personal level. That way, you know how the characters feel but it won't feel so odd when the chapter switches focus between characters. I believe it's called "3rd-Person Limited" but I wouldn't know, I never payed attention in English class in Middle School.
