We know all Sue's should be killed...so howdo you stay away from the dreaded Sue or Stu?

Good question. These are my thoughts, and some of the things I try to work on when writing an original character:
I try to imagine, as I'm writing, how everything I am having this character say and do would sound or look in real life. Does it seem realistic, or is it more like a sitcom? Do real people talk like that? Is this the way a stranger would react to her? And is this the way she/he would react to a stranger?
Another thing to think about is whether the main antagonist(s) in the story (often either the Socs, or an abusive boyfriend/parent/etc.) has any motivation for what they do. Have you put enough thought into them that you could write the story from their point of view, with them as the protagonist? Because I think that a lot of what makes a character a Mary-Sue is the way everybody else in the story reacts to them, and behaves in general. If most of the other characters are flat, my character won't have much depth either. Everybody's got their own agenda in real life. If it feels like they're all following hers, though, you lose that sensation of multiple people all with their own stuff going on.

I try to keep my characters as true to life as the situation will allow. Their looks, status, relationships, their names...It seems to work for me. *Shrugs*

Sometimes it just seems difficult... but whatever, I'm probably just mediocre. You know what? I'm waiting 'till I've written more stories and am a bit of a better writer before I attempt to write anything more on Joshlynn. It... would just be way to easy to turn her into a Sue, I don't wanna let that happen. I'm still gonna write Lucas, though... I think I got him pretty good...

Hm, how too keep away from a Sue/Stu? I'm with Tens on this one. Each of my characters are based on faults, likes, dislikes, of my friends and myself not one of my OC's is perfect because none of the people I know are perfect. All of my orginal based work is from personal experiance so I don't have a hard time staying away from the Sue/Stu anymore.
However when I was new at writing I got a name for my OC and that was it, they were then thrust into the story and eventually became perfect because as a new/younge writer I didn't know at the time how to create an OC and plan out a fic...heck I still dont and all of my fan-fic work is made up as I go along. lol.

I'm gonna have to agree with Tens and Atmosphere—I try to keep my characters as real as possible. If I can see them interacting in every day life, then they pass in my book.

Well, for me - even though I know it is definitely a sue-like thing to do, I started out creating Emma Smith/Winston like myself, but better. Better looking, more popular, and more talented. But then because I hate sue's too, and because she is Dally's sister I made her more like him. She has his hair and eyes, and is tough - but knows when to feel and whatnot and is very kind. Protective, too - one of her main traits.
But on the topic of her being sue-like, I find she acts like me in some situations (or I act like her.. i cant tell the difference any more.) but yes, I do try to make her more human. She is fairly wary of new people she meets, takes a while to warm up to them, and has a pretty hot tempre. Also, she is mistake-central. Always getting into trouble and saying the wrong thing though her intentions are pure.
I really do worry sometimes that she comes off as a sue - but since I have her so thoroughly created in my mind I know she isn't.
But I guess since I only have 6 chaps up she hasnt really come out of her shyness yet, so she isnt really herself and comes off as a mary sue DX
ok, so i'm rambling now... I guess I'll just disappear and spam some other forum on some other site XD
